AI Overviews and Your Contractor Website: What Google’s AI Search Means for Your Leads
TL;DR: Google’s AI Overviews now answer many searches directly on the results page, cutting the number of people who click through to websites. For contractors, this means Google Business Profile accuracy, reviews, and local SEO fundamentals matter more than ever, while a website’s job is shifting from ‘win the click’ to ‘win the citation and the call.’
If you’ve noticed your website traffic numbers look different than they did a year or two ago, you’re not imagining it. Google has been rolling AI-generated answers, called AI Overviews, into search results for a huge share of queries. That includes searches like “roof repair Katy TX” or “HVAC company near The Woodlands.”
This article explains what AI Overviews are, how they pull information about your contracting business, what the data shows about clicks and leads, and what you can actually do about it. No guarantees, no hype — just what’s changed and what still works.
What Are AI Overviews, in Plain Terms
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google places at the top of search results, above the normal list of blue links. Instead of showing ten websites and letting the searcher pick one, Google now often writes a short answer itself, pulling from multiple sources.
Structure your website content in question-and-answer format whenever possible, use headings that match common search queries, and provide direct, factual answers in the first sentence or paragraph of each section.
That’s the content style Google’s AI tends to favor.
For local searches — “fence company near me,” “pool screen repair Sugar Land” — the AI Overview works a little differently than it does for general informational questions.
In local search contexts, AI Overviews function by analysing vast amounts of local business data, including Google Business Profile information, customer reviews, website content, and local directories, and the system creates personalised responses based on location and query intent.
How Google Decides Which Contractors Get Mentioned
Your website is only one input. For local trade searches, your Google Business Profile often carries more weight than your site.
Google’s AI Overviews pull from Business Profile data when generating answers to local queries, using the information you’ve published to describe businesses, compare options, and recommend specific services.
Reviews factor in directly too.
Google AI Overviews pull from reviews to generate summary statements about local businesses, and you need recent reviews, not just a high total number.
This is one reason Results Digital installs a Google review display widget on every website and SEO client site — fresh, visible reviews feed both the human visitor and the AI summarizing your business.
Consistency matters as much as volume.
Google AI Overviews pull local business facts from your Google Business Profile, your website, and third-party directories, then blend them into one summary, and the more aligned these sources are, the stronger and more reliable the resulting answer.
If your Katy office listing shows one phone number on Google and a different one on Facebook or an industry directory, that mismatch can work against you.
What the Data Shows About Clicks
The headline number contractors should know: fewer people are clicking through to websites when an AI Overview appears. A randomized field experiment out of Carnegie Mellon and the Indian School of Business found
AI Overviews appeared on 42% of queries, and removing them increased outbound clicks from 0.38 to 0.61 per search — they reduced outbound organic clicks by 38% on triggered queries, with zero-click search rising from 54% to 72%.
Other large-scale studies put the decline even higher for top-ranking pages.
Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of all Google search queries, and when an Overview is present, organic click-through rate falls between 34% and 61% depending on position.
There’s a meaningful upside buried in that data, though. Being mentioned by name inside the AI answer changes the math.
Pages cited in AI Overviews receive 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited pages on the same query, and one study found a 35% traffic lift for brands cited in overviews versus those that were not.
In other words, the penalty hits businesses that are invisible to the AI. Businesses the AI actually names tend to do better, not worse.
This changes the goal. Ranking on page one used to be the finish line. Now, being the contractor Google’s AI actually names and recommends for “roofer in Montgomery County” or “pool screen repair Pearland” is the finish line.
What This Means for a Trade Business in Houston or Orlando
Searches like “siding contractor Conroe” or “tree removal Tomball” are exactly the kind of local, service-based queries where AI Overviews are showing up. A homeowner in Magnolia searching for storm damage repair after a hailstorm may never scroll past the AI summary and the map pack.
That has a few practical implications for how you spend your marketing budget:
- Your Google Business Profile is no longer just for the map pack. It’s a direct data feed into the AI answer. Incomplete fields, outdated hours, or a stale service list can quietly cost you visibility.
- Reviews are a visibility asset, not just a trust signal. Recent, specific reviews mentioning the service you performed and the city you worked in give the AI language to use when summarizing your business.
- Paid channels don’t disappear from the equation. Google Ads and Google Local Services Ads still place your business in front of ready-to-call homeowners, often above or alongside the AI Overview, which matters more as organic clicks tighten. See our breakdown of Google Ads versus lead marketplaces like Angi and Thumbtack for how that tradeoff plays out for contractors.
- Website content still matters, just differently. A page that clearly answers “how much does gutter replacement cost in Harris County” in the first few sentences is more useful to both searchers and AI systems than a vague services page.
What You Shouldn’t Do
There’s no special schema markup or technical trick that guarantees an AI Overview citation.
Google advises adherence to existing structured data policies and describes AI features’ link selection via a query fan-out mechanism, with no schema guarantees provided.
Be skeptical of any vendor who promises guaranteed placement inside AI answers.
Be equally careful with reviews. The FTC finalized a rule that
reviews must come from real customers with genuine experiences — AI-generated or ghostwritten reviews that misrepresent consumer experience are prohibited
, and
compensation for reviews is allowed but can’t be tied to leaving a positive or negative review.
Since AI Overviews increasingly summarize your reviews verbatim, a fabricated review doesn’t just risk a fine — it risks Google’s AI repeating a claim about your business that isn’t true. Violations can carry steep civil penalties, so review generation tactics need to stay clean.
Where to Focus First
If AI Overviews are already cutting into your organic traffic, the fix isn’t one single tactic. It’s tightening the fundamentals that feed Google’s AI: an accurate, fully built-out Google Business Profile; a steady stream of genuine, recent reviews; consistent business information across directories; and website content written to answer real customer questions plainly. Paid search and Local Services Ads remain a reliable way to stay visible while organic traffic adjusts to this new search behavior.
